Lisa Draper and The Sorenson Gallery present “Nature in Fluid and Flame”, an abstract presentation of the forces of nature that shape the world around us.

I use fluid and flame to explore our relation to powerful forces of nature - particularly water, fire, and the cosmos.

I begin with a 2-part epoxy resin, and add color to bring the adhesive to life.  I pour and manipulate the mixture on a custom-made surface, apply heat using a blowtorch (to eliminate bubbles and enhance oil-based effects), and leave it to cure.

Each eye-popping layer has a life of its own.  I choose the colors and general movement, but even after I leave my studio, the fluid medium continues to change throughout its 24 hour cure.  It is incredible to watch the artwork breathe and dance throughout the night. I love the journey of fear and discovery I live as I walk away from my work, and return to something independent each time I create.

To bring structure, I’ll sometimes add a layer of alcohol ink, acrylic, or metal leafing. I top everything off with a scratch-resistant clear coat to give a strong and smooth finish. Sharing the breathtaking results are my favorite part of this adventure.
